Singapore is home to the most significant evidence of early Arab-Chinese maritime trade relations
Members of DEMAX GmbH toured through China and Singapore in October looking for traces of maritime trade between China and the Arabian Gulf in the early Islamic period. The Belitung shipwreck, salvaged in 1998/99 off the coast of southern Sumatra, has been identified as a Dhow that was built on the Arabian peninsula. On its final voyage, the vessel carried the famous ‚Tang Treasure‘: more than 60.000 pieces of china and other valuables. Cargo and remnants from the Belitung shipwreck are stored in Singapore and will be featured in the first episode of ARABIA FELIX - A History of Oman.
